Today during extended whānau time we looked at the life and great achievements of Makereti (Maggie Papakura). This was particularly important for those who are new to our whānau and who did not know about this inspirational woman.
There are many life lessons that we can all learn from Makereti, including:
- It is important to know who you are and where you are from - You can embrace other cultures and still hold onto and stay true to your own - Travel broadens your mind and presents you with great opportunities - You are never too old to study and to embark on new adventures - Manaakitanga: The importance of showing hospitality and kindness (in good times and bad) - Mana Wahine: The great power and responsibilities of being a woman
As T.K. Penniman said of his friend Makereti "The secret of her own greatness of soul lay in knowing who she was."
He wahine whai mana a Makereti i roto i ngā ao e rua, otirā he whakaihi wairua mā tātou katoa.
